Role Overview
Reporting to the Head of International Employee Relations in the UK, this role will be responsible for managing all labour relations matters and employee relations (ER) cases in Germany and therefore located in Munich.
Essential Functions
This position will primarily focus on providing ER situational support in Germany and supporting strategic initiatives in the country. The role will:
Manage the relationship with our Works Council Serve as a subject matter expert on a broad range of ER issues, including performance management, internal investigations, disciplinary actions and terminations, severance, the redundancy and consultation process, and HR policies and practices, among others. Role Overview

Essential Functions
This position will primarily focus on providing ER situational support in Germany and supporting strategic initiatives in the country. The role will:
- Plan, prepare and manage Works Council activities
- Maintain updated the shared database with WC
- Conducting investigations and preparing comprehensive investigation reports which includes recommendations for complaint resolution, coaching, counselling, and discipline where appropriate.
- Responding to and investigating complaints involving complex employment matters under guidance and supervision from senior Employee Relations management and internal and External Legal counsel.
- Ensuring application and adoption of German regulations and benchmark with peers and the Pharma association
- Advising on and support business change processes, including acquisitions, restructurings and reorganizations
- Providing insight and interpretation to managers and employees throughout Gilead regarding relevant employment principles, complex employee relations issues, performance management, workplace investigations and critical incident management as well as on processes linked to occupational health process (“BEM”).
- Pro-actively assists in reviewing, revising and/or recommending ER policies for the company and propose, align and consult on required Works Council agreements.
- Partner effectively to create change management and communication plans for a broad audience to include Human Resources and Gilead employees as appropriate.
- Proactively identifies and communicates employment and workplace trends (internally and externally).
- Conducts ongoing analysis of employee relations data to identify trends and determine levels of staff satisfaction in order to partner to create and develop programs and initiatives that will support strategic efforts to create an ideal work environment.
- Designs and facilitates training and workshops on key HR policies and best practices.
- Collaborate across functions and departments, including Legal for advice and decision on employee relations matters.
- Conduct regular meetings with key stakeholders in HR and the business.
- Support investigations (with a focus on but not limited to German speaking countries)
- Be involved in cross-border projects.
- Consistently exercise discretion and independent judgment in advising HR and business leaders on how to navigate sensitive ER issues in a fair, compliant, and pragmatic manner.
- Think critically and solve problems by applying principles, policies, and procedures to unique situations.
- Demonstrate the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment and navigate unique or ambiguous situations using their best judgment
- Collaborate well with teams across functions, departments, and geographies
- Work collaboratively, lead and influence at all levels within the organization, and make decisions while keeping all partners and leaders informed
- Handle difficult conversations and sensitive employee information
- Demonstrate a solid working knowledge and understanding of relevant labour and employment laws and regulations
- Demonstrate operational and process rigor and familiarity
- Be proficient in related technology and tools/case management, such as Workday, ServiceNow, Office365, and OneDrive.
- 5+ years of relevant experience managing German Employee Relations and a BS or BA degree.
- Employment Law Degree prefered.
- Language – German and English required
- Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
- Broad knowledge of HR principles, practices, and procedures in Germany.
- Requires solid working knowledge and understanding of Human Resources legislation/employment law, principles, policies, and procedures.
- Ability to exercise good judgment and provide strategic advice.
- Must have demonstrable experience in changing work environments and the effects associated in the HR area.
- Ability to effectively interact with employees at all levels of the Company.
- May require ability to manage staff.
- Effective customer service skills.
- Excellent teamwork and interpersonal communication skills are required.
- Must possess solid networking and influencing skills.
