QuantumDiamonds is building the world's first commercial quantum sensing tools for semiconductor inspection and failure analysis. As a full-time Mechanical Engineer (Optomechanics & Quantum Sensing), you will join our multidisciplinary Hardware Pre-Development Team, taking hands-on ownership of the mechanical and optomechanical concepts behind the lab demonstrators of our widefield Quantum Diamond Microscope (QDM).
We are looking for someone who thinks naturally in three dimensions and enjoys building what they design. You translate the optical, RF, and magnetic requirements of our setups into elegant, pragmatic mechanical concepts, and make sure every technology we want to test fits together in one working demonstrator. Speed is what sets pre-development apart, and rapid prototyping is your main lever.
You work closely with the mechanical engineers in our Product Development Team and hand over your designs once a technology is mature. The role is ideal if you already bring first professional experience in mechanical design and want more ownership: you will shape hardware from day one, supported by experienced mechanical, optical, and quantum engineers, and grow into precision engineering at the intersection of optics, magnetics, and quantum sensing.
Founded in 2022 as a spin-off of TU Munich, QD leverages quantum sensors to rapidly capture three-dimensional current maps within multi-layer chips. Our strong, international team of over 70, including physicists, engineers, data scientists, and other experts, works side by side with major semiconductor manufacturers, supporting chip debugging and accelerating yield analysis. - Develop the (opto-) mechanical concepts of our lab demonstrators: bring requirements together early with the physicists and engineers who will use the setup, and turn them into elegant, pragmatic designs that keep our setups stable, accessible, and easy to modify.
- Drive rapid prototyping for our team: choose the right process for each part (e.g., 3D printing, laser cutting, machined or off-the-shelf components), use our in-house printers and external suppliers to get parts fast, and build, test, and iterate your designs yourself, so that a new idea becomes testable hardware in days rather than months.
- Integrate the full setup: make sure optics, lasers, microwave delivery, magnetics, electronics, and the diamond sensor all fit together, physically and functionally, in one working system.
- Design for the physics behind the instrument: choose materials and geometries that stay compatible with our optical, RF, and magnetic requirements, and keep an eye on stiffness, thermal drift, and tolerance budgets.
- Create clean CAD models, drawings, and bills of materials in SolidWorks, and document your designs so that colleagues can reproduce, modify, and manufacture them.
- Act as the mechanical interface to our Product Development Team, aligning your concepts with their mechanical engineers throughout and learning from their experience, and handing over validated designs once a technology is mature.
We are primarily hiring for strong mechanical fundamentals, solid CAD skills, hands-on prototyping, and curiosity about the physics. The optomechanics, RF and magnetics, and precision engineering side of the job can be learned here.
- A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Precision Engineering, Physics, or a related field, or a comparable technical qualification with hands-on design experience.
- Solid working knowledge of SolidWorks (or a comparable 3D CAD tool) and the ability to turn an idea into a manufacturable design.
- Practical knowledge of rapid prototyping technologies (e.g., 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC basics) and a good sense for what each process can deliver in terms of accuracy, stiffness, and material properties.
- A hands-on mentality: you enjoy building, measuring, adjusting, and rebuilding your own designs rather than handing them to someone else.
- Strong spatial reasoning and systems thinking: you see how parts fit together, and you anticipate early where a setup will conflict, drift, or become impossible to align.
- A curious, exploratory mindset: you like trying things out, you are comfortable when the right answer is not known yet, and you would rather test a quick prototype than debate a design on paper.
- Good communication and documentation skills, comfortable working in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary team. Our working language is English.
- First experience with precision engineering tasks, tolerance budgets, or optomechanical design.
- A feel for material properties and their compatibility with optical, RF, and magnetic environments, for example, non-magnetic materials close to sensitive sensors.
- A physics-oriented background, or a strong interest in understanding the measurement principle behind the QDM and growing into it.
- Experience with FEA (e.g., ANSYS), machining, or working with external manufacturing partners.
