We are currently looking for an

Embedded Software Engineer (m/f/d)

for our headquarters in Munich:

Responsibilities:

We are looking for an experienced Embedded Software Engineer focused on chip personalization and secure microcontroller development. This role is ideal for engineers who understand secure OS-level development for smart cards and embedded chips, and who are capable of managing cryptographic protocols and chip communication for large-scale identity document personalization systems.

You will support the development, setup, and operation of software-based personalization workflows for biometric documents, collaborating with cross-functional teams on both the software stack and secure hardware.

Key Responsibilities:

Secure OS Integration & Chip Personalization:

  • Design and implement secure chip personalization workflows for Java Card and native OS-based microcontrollers,
  • Integrate and test personalization processes using global standards (ICAO, ISO/IEC 7816/14443, eMRTD, eID),
  • Establish secure communication protocols (PACE, EAC, BAC, PKI) for chip encoding and verification.

Embedded Software Development & Support:

  • Collaborate on software modules interacting with chips via personalization equipment,
  • Configure chip profiles, applets, and secure key injection processes,
  • Work closely with personalization equipment vendors to optimize firmware/software interfaces.

Cryptography & Secure Data Handling:

  • Implement and manage cryptographic operations (e.g., asymmetric key pairs, certificate chains, symmetric key encryption),
  • Ensure secure lifecycle management of identity data and keys during production and personalization,
  • Participate in audits and penetration testing support for secure personalization flows.

Testing, Documentation & Training:

  • Maintain test cases for chip OS compatibility, personalization integrity, and system security,
  • Produce high-quality technical documentation, SOPs, and integration guidelines,
  • Conduct internal trainings and customer onboarding sessions for chip personalization.

Requirements:

  • Degree in computer science, embedded systems, electrical engineering, or related field,
  • 5+ years experience in embedded software development, preferably with smart cards, eID, or passport chip projects,
  • Proficient in Java Card, GlobalPlatform, and native OS development for microcontrollers,
  • Deep understanding of cryptographic personalization (PACE, EAC, PKI, BAC),
  • Familiarity with secure document standards (ICAO Doc 9303, ISO/IEC 7816, ISO/IEC 14443),
  • Experience integrating personalization software with production environments and secure key management,
  • Excellent debugging, diagnostic, and firmware interfacing skills,
  • Strong communication skills in English; knowledge of French, German, or Portuguese is a plus,
  • Willingness to travel for on-site setup, testing, and training.
