The Role: Lead Engineer - Org Management

We’re looking for a Lead Engineer to join our Org Management team, based in Munich. This team is responsible for managing company structures, legal entities, and customer information storage systems. As a Lead Engineer, you’ll be at the forefront of designing and delivering high-quality solutions that enable Personio to scale efficiently.

About The Org Management Team

The Organization Management team enables customers to easily, reliably, and accurately map and plan their fundamental organizational structures in Personio. These structures are critical in delivering value across apps and surfaces, making the team a key platform provider that empowers other teams to seamlessly build using our services and data.

This year, the team is tackling two major challenges:

  • Saving HR admins valuable time by intelligently inferring employee configurations based on their assigned country, office, department, etc. This effort is central to making Personio "the intelligent HR system" and requires designing a flexible and scalable architecture.
  • Enhancing support for large customers by enabling admin roles scoped to specific organizational entities. This means, for example, granting an admin in the Spanish subsidiary permissions for Spain but standard access elsewhere. This initiative involves deep collaboration across multiple partner teams.

What You'll Do:

  • Lead Technical Excellence – Deliver large, high-quality projects that enhance our platform and customer experience.
  • Hands-On Development – Write and review code, design systems, and architect high-performance solutions using Java/Kotlin (JVM stack), AWS, Kafka, and event-driven architectures.
  • Estimation, Scoping, and Planning – Define the team's strategy and roadmap in collaboration with product managers and other engineering teams.
  • Solve Complex Technical Challenges – Address issues related to scalability, data integrity, and security while optimizing performance.
  • Mentoring and Coaching – Guide engineers, promote best practices, and foster a high-performance team culture.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration – Work with product managers, designers, and other teams to align engineering efforts with business goals.
  • Operational Leadership – Improve monitoring, observability, and incident response processes to enhance system reliability.

What We’re Looking For:

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience, with a focus on backend development.
  • Expertise in Java/Kotlin (JVM stack) and AWS.
  • Experience with Kafka and event-driven architectures is highly desirable.
  • A proactive problem solver with the ability to simplify complex challenges.
  • Passion for technical excellence, performance optimization, and operational reliability.
  • Strong leadership and mentorship abilities, with excellent communication skills.
